Delhi: Haircut, Illusions, and Food

posted in: India 2025 | 1

Yesterday started with a haircut. Then I visited the Museum of Illusions. And after that was a food tour I booked a few months ago.

Here’s all the details.

Haircut

I checked Google maps to see if there was a nearby barber, but didn’t see one that had very good reviews. So I asked the concierge at the hotel, and they said I could get a haircut at the hotel spa.

I think he did a good job, and it actually cost less than I pay back in Mexico!

Museum of Illusions

My food tour didn’t start until 2pm, and this museum was very close to the meeting point for the tour. So I decided to give it a try.

Riding the Metro

I took the Delhi Metro. This should have been easy, but apparently it’s not as easy as it seems. Google maps gave two suggestions. One was to ride two stops and then walk 13 minutes. The other was to ride three stops, and then transfer to another train for one stop. I opted for this second plan.

However, my ticket (you have to buy a ticket; you can’t tap your credit card to enter) was only good for the first train. I would have to buy a second ticket for the second train, and the line to buy a ticket was very long. So I decided to take a tuktuk. But finding the exit was also not as easy as it should have been.

Eventually I did get to where I wanted to go.

What an illusion!

The Museum of Illusions was enjoyable. The staff were very friendly and helpful, explaining the different illusions and taking my picture when I was part of the illusion. Some of the illusions were silly. Some were ones you’ve seen pictures of hundreds of times before (the room where two people stand in opposite corners and one looks huge while the other looks small). Still, I had a good time, and it killed a half hour before my food tour started.

Old Delhi Food Tour

I signed up for this tour with The Lost Compass. The full name is “The Great Indian Food Tour (Old Delhi Food and Heritage Tour).” It was just me and two young guys from Washington, DC. Our guide, Parul, was fun and full of interesting info about Delhi. And the food stops were outstanding. We rode the metro, rode tuktuks, and did a lot of walking through the very crowded streets of Old Delhi. In all, we tasted thirteen dishes at eight or nine venues.

Here are my two favorite dishes from the tour:

Aloo chaat
Kachori from the place that supposedly has the best kachori in Delhi

I’ve added all my photos from yesterday to my Delhi photo album.
