Africa 2024

Going on an African safari has been a lifelong dream, and I finally made it happen in July and August 2024. My friend Mary Ann and I put together an itinerary that included a few nights in Cape Town at the beginning, nine nights at three different camps in Botswana, a visit to Victoria Falls, treks to see the Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys of Rwanda, and five nights at the end with our friend Tom and his daughters Annee and Tricia in Nanyuki, Kenya.
This couldn’t have been a better plan. In Cape Town we did a day on the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus, a private tour to the Cape of Good Hope, a walking tour, and a winery tour. The three camps where we stayed in Botswana had distinctly different characteristics. One was mostly desert, one was on an island in the midst of the Okavango Delta, and one was on the banks of the Linyanti River in the northeastern corner of the country. Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe was magnificent; the primates of Rwanda were miraculous; and in Kenya Annee planned a whole slew of awesome activities that included an overnight in Samburu National Reserve.
Along the way we managed to see all the animals I could have hoped to see, including all of the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo); the “Big Seven” (the Big Five plus the African wild dog and the cheetah); the “Samburu Special Five” (giraffe, zebra, ostrich, oryx, and gerenuk); the “Ugly Five” (wildebeest, warthog, vulture, marabou stork, and hyena); and two of the “Small Five” (Buffalo weaver and leopard tortoise).
This was a trip that absolutely lived up to all my expectations and exceeded most of them.

Blog Posts
I didn’t blog during this trip. Instead, I brought a notebook and kept a journal. The blog posts below are transcriptions and embellishments from my journal with photo illustrations.

The year ahead: 2023–2024
I like to say that if I’m not currently traveling, I’m busy planning my next trip(s). In this case, I have three upcoming trips in the next thirteen months, and possibly will squeeze in one or two more. Here’s a preview.

African Safari: The final plan
One of the things that seemed completely remote and unlikely for me as a younger person was the idea of going on a safari. Safaris were exotic, expensive, and beyond my aspirations. As I’ve made travel a fundamental part of my life, the idea of going on an African safari went from being a dream…

A tour to the Cape of Good Hope
Monday, July 22, 19:00 No visit to Cape Town would be complete without heading to the Cape of Good Hope. That’s what we did today on a private tour with a charming and knowledgeable guide named Danny.

Last Day in Cape Town
Wednesday, July 24, 04:00 Yes, it’s 4am. Yesterday I slept right up until my alarm went off at 7am. That was my first full night’s sleep of this trip. But today I’m up again in the middle of the night. Rather than lying in bed hoping to get back to sleep, I’m writing.

Botswana wrap up: Pelo and DumaTau
Sunday, July 28, 10:30 I’ve been bad about journaling. But the experiences have been so much about visual and aural stimuli that it’s so hard to translate them into words. I’ll write a little about our routine, which is slightly different here at Pelo camp than it was at Qorokwe.

Rwanda: Genocide, Gorillas, and More
Wednesday, August 7, 16:00 What can I say about our time in Rwanda? First off, I can say we made it here! We arrived Monday morning at 07:00, sailed through immigration thanks to a very helpful representative from Wilderness who installed us in the Radisson lounge while he got our luggage. Then he brought us…

The African adventure ends in Kenya
Saturday, August 10, 21:00 Nairobi to Nanyuki In spite of the long delay, we made it to Nairobi and slept in a very nice Crowne Plaza Hotel near the airport. Yesterday morning we had a driver (Stephen) take us to Nanyuki, and here we are at the home of our friend Tom and his daughter…
