A Not-So-Quiet Getaway
My company shuts down for the week between Christmas and New Year’s, so it seems like a good time to get away. In 2016 I went to San Francisco
. In 2017 I decided on Mexico.
My goal was to go somewhere peaceful and relaxing. I was looking for a quiet village where there wouldn’t be a lot of tourists (at least not from the USA). Since it was just three weeks after getting back from my South America trip, I thought I could use a little relaxation.
After doing some research, I settled on Tepoztlan, about an hour’s drive south of Mexico City. It seemed to tick all the right buttons: small, few Americans, but popular enough as a weekend getaway from Mexico City that it has restaurants and a few interesting things to see. I found pictures like the one above, and I thought it looks like it will be a perfect destination.
Unfortunately, getting there turned out to be more complicated. I ended up flying to Mexico City through Las Vegas on two separate round trip tickets on two different airlines. Then there was still the matter of getting to Tepoztlan. Plus my return flight was in the morning. In the end I decided to do just four days in Tepoztlan and three days in Mexico City. I used Blacklane (which I highly recommend) for transportation to and from Tepoztlan.
Tepoztlan also didn’t turn out to be the peaceful, relaxing getaway I was looking for. But I loved it anyway, and I did find time to relax while I was there. Mexico City, of course, is anything but quiet, but I loved it too.

A Post-Vacation Vacation (4/20/2017) - After my four-week tour in South America this November, staying in fourteen different places and flying twelve separate legs, I decided I will need a post-vacation vacation. Luckily, I work for a company that closes our office for the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. Last year I went to San Francisco for the more... My Mexico Holiday Part 1 (12/24/2017) - It might be blasphemy to post about my current trip when I haven't finished all my posts from South America, but here I am in Tepoztlan, Morelos, Mexico, and I want to write about it while it is fresh. Getting Here I flew Seattle to Las Vegas on Friday evening. My trip got off to more... My Mexico Holiday Part 2 (12/25/2017) - Evening in Tepoztlan I arrived at my Airbnb a little before 9:00 last night. It was already dark. After I got settled, I decided to take a walk to the center to see if I could get some food. I hadn't eaten much all day and I was hungry. My airbnb host, Francisco, told me more... My Mexico Holiday Part 3 (12/25/2017) - Christmas in Tepoztlan At one point yesterday, as I was wandering aimlessly around Tepoztlan thinking about what I should do next, I let go. I let go of the need to do anything next. Of the need to have an agenda. I can't recall when I've ever done this before on a vacation. But this more... My Mexico Holiday Part 4 (12/28/2017) - The hike from hell So on a hill above Tepoztlan is this pyramid. It is called El Tepozteco. It is a small temple to Tepoztecatl, the Aztec god of the alcoholic beverage pulque. To get there you have to hike uphill. It's as hard as it looks. No. Harder. Starting in the city, at 5600 more... My Mexico Holiday Part 5 (1/7/2018) - I started this post a few days ago when I was in Mexico City, but I just couldn't get it finished while I was still away. My itinerary was completely disorganized. I had made no advance plans, read no guide books, and put together no list of must-sees. So I was just winging it, and more...
